Why does the Watchtower Society always choose harsh legalism over love
by yadda yadda 2 inone of the most disturbing aspects of the organisation for me is that the watchtower leaders prefer legalistic, harsh, pharasaical interpretations on a range of doctrines/policies that have the potential to severely harm peoples lives, when there are more loving and reasonable positions/interpretations that could easily be adopted by the governing body without feeling they were betraying the scriptures.. for example:.
1. blood transfusions a clear no-no scripturally, a gross sin worthy of disfellowshipment (harsh, pharasaical legalistic approach) - or - it's debateable and we can't be sure.
dogmatism not appropriate in matters of life or death.

Basically, it wouldn't be a cult anymore. The last few ocassions I have spoken with jws, I make a point to ask about their dfd sons, daughters, parents, etc. They always hang their heads in shame and mutter a few regretful words. It is what they have been taught to do.
Then I make a comment to them saying something nice about the dfd/fading relative. One lady told me her son was divorced and had a new girlfriend and had no interest in the "truth". I said I hoped he found happiness with his new girlfriend because I always liked him.
They are usually caught of guard because they expect you to shake your head and be sad. I haven't come across one jw who didn't stop and allow the real personality to show for just a moment.
It's truly sad how all hope for someone they love has been taken away from them. One mother, years ago, told me we wouldn't care if our children were destroyed by God. I was already having serious doubts about the religion and that helped to seal it for me.
Legalism over love is what is demanded, but it can be untaught. We used to think that way to some degree. It is so freeing when you realize it's the other way around.

Why would a transcendent God do anything?
by gubberningbody ini'm stuck on that one.
the answer "love" isn't a serious answer because you can't love without an object (unless it's self love)..

Poppers, you speak of believing that you are separate from God as the thing that keeps you trapped in the world of form and creates the notion of suffering and lack.
How then do you escape the world of form or even just the notion of suffering and lack? I understand that all things are connected, but moments of transcendence are few and far between. Mostly, we live in the physical world and deal with the consequences. I assume the death of the physical form would be the solution.
The idea that life would be less interesting without the bad stuff is not something I am so sure about. Does God really require such challenges to be amused? Would life in general not be more pleasant without suffering? Could challenges not come from the endless possibilities of the intricacies of life itself?
Satanus, I agree that the term awareness is a good substitution for the term God. Sometimes, I think if you want to play in the physical world, you have to pay the price. It is not all "good". Using good and bad "gods" does little to answer the question of why suffering exists.

Witness's seem more like Robots than humans...
by Leprechaun inyeah witness's seem to me to be more like robots than humans, just watch them when your around them everything is programed that they say, its weird the only time i personaly ever seen anything closely like it were the "pligs" in hilldale utah and saint george utah.
you can't get a stright answer from them with out it being scripted from their magazines.
i feel sorry for them i really do, i was raised a witness untill the past fifteen years or so, the term borg fits well, if you go to one of their conventions it is a lot like going to an amway convention they mostly act like they are in a drunken bliss.

Welcome. I think a lot of us would have loved to call out bullshit at a meeting or convention. It is kind of a fantasy of mine, but you actually did it? That's funny.
When you get away from the witnesses for some time, it is easy to see the robotic or cultish manner. It sticks out like a sore thumb. Sometimes it is funny, other times sad. You have to remember there are real people underneath.
Tell us more about yourself when you feel comfortable. cl

Poppers, that makes sense except that God's sport or play seems to be insensitive to the suffering encountered by innocent people. Why would his play include such things?

my husband is getting called on by an elder I hate
by homeschool inmy husband was not going to go to the memorial, but then his sister started bullying him via texts...saying that he needed to reconsider his decision not to go.
i work on saturdays usually, and was not home yesterday when an elder (who tried to pursuade my husband to quit dating me a year and a half ago) dropped by to tell him how great it was to see him at the memorial.
hubby is inactive and does not believe the jw's anymore (i'm 99% sure).

Maybe ask your husband if he would like you to be there? My husband and I have been out a few years and he has a no call rule, period.
If it is an elder that tried to break you two up, maybe your husband should consider your feelings. The same thing happened to me when I didn't respond quickly enough to the "truth". Oh yeah, we were expecting our first child too. Can't you just feel the love?

Why do we say Witness teachings are idiotic - Weren't all of us Witnesses?
by BonaFide inso many on this forum talk about how witnesses are stupid, ignorant, unable to reason, and brainwashed.
we also pick apart the watchtower as having such stupid teachings, and how anyone can see all of it is so ridiculous.
some use terms like the filthful slave, and the washtowel.. yet, many of us were witnesses for years, or even decades.

I think the trash talking of the jw religion is a reaction to being duped, sometimes for a long time. Then there's the covering of pedophiles, the destroying of families and the the loved ones lost to the blood pact.
Did I mention the lost years and the countless life altering decisions one would have made differently?
